Abstract

The number of people killed in road traffic accidents has declined despite an increase in traffic density, but further efforts are still needed to improve active and passive safety systems. First generation driver assistance systems that use the vehicle variables for the optimization of driving stability are in series production. These include the lane-keeping assistant and collision avoidance systems. Second-generation driver assistance systems, e.g. the electronic crumple zone, are capable of processing information from the vehicle's environment. The development of driver assistance systems is discussed with reference to product liability, traffic laws and operating regulations, the man-machine interface and vehicle monitoring. For the covering abstract see ITRD E120563.
