Abstract

This report summarizes the construction and initial evaluation of 12 full-scale test sites incorporating fly ash as a partial replacement for a) lime in subgrades and bases (8 sites), b) portland cement in concrete pavements (3 sites) and c) portland cement in a concrete box culvert (1 site). Each site consisted of several test sections of differing designs. Conclusions reached included 1) lime-fly ash stabilization of clay type soils is effective and easily constructed, 2) replacing up to 25 percent of portland cement with high lime fly ash on a 1:1 basis resulted in no loss of strength nor any construction problems. In addition to summarizing the construction and evaluation of the test sites, specific guidelines for construction of highways using fly ash are given. (FHWA)
