Recent technological advances in coastal aquaculture in India

The importance of coastal aquaculture in the \t \ncontext of augmenting fish production, impro\t \nving rural economy and productive utilisation \t \nof derelict waters was recognised only recently \t \nin India. The need for an urgent development \t \nof coastal aquaculture received further stress as \t \ncertain fish stocks in the marine capture fishery \t \nindicated optimum level of exploitation, and \t \ntheir catch returns, despite increased efforts, \t \nshowed declining trend. Following this, several \t \nnational Institutes concerned with research and \t \ndevelopment of marine and brackishwater \t \nfisheries, initiated a series of investigations on \t \nthe coastal aquaculture of suitable commercial \t \norganisms. The important results of these \t \ninvestigations, and the technological progress \t \nmade in the field in recent years are presented \t \nin this paper.
