Abstract

The 1966 literature on wastewater and water pollution control for a number of industrial plants is reviewed. This article is divided into discussions for each industrial application covered. One such discussion is on petroleum processing waste. This reveals that Standard Oil Co. of Ohio has begun a $1 million program to modernize wastewater treating facilities at its Toledo, Ohio, refinery. At the Marathon Oil Co., Texas City, Tex., refinery, a new oil- separator with reaction-jet inlet polishes the effluent water with very small air bubbles, so that the final effluent contains less than 15 mg/l of oil. This new plant contains the following 3 stages: gravity oil separation to remove free oil, flocculation with or without chemical treatment, and dissolved-air floatation for polishing. The equipment consists of 2 gravity oil separators, 2 rapid-mix chambers, and 2 float-treat units. American Oil Co. has just completed testing a new flocculation unit at its 35,000-bbl Salt Lake City, Utah, refinery. The unit will process refinery wastewater to remove oil and solids before it is discharged into the city drainage canal. (606 refs.)
