Abstract

Enver Pasha is one of the most discussed and written about people in our recent history. Enver Pasha holds an important place in recent Ottoman history, both in terms of his personality and his military career and statesmanship. The information given by Kâzım Karabekir Pasha, one of his closest friends, about Enver Pasha's activities during this period is extremely important. As a matter of fact, both of them were among the most popular commanders of the army and also worked together in the Committee of Union and Progress. This duo, before the second Constitutional Period, founded the Monastery branch of the Committee of Union and Progress. After the declaration of the Constitution, the work of this duo made a significant contribution to the organization of the Committee of Union and Progress in Istanbul and its subsequent coming to power. In this process, while Enver Pasha began to rise rapidly in the state ranks, Kâzım Karabekir Pasha kept himself away from politics as much as possible. After the Committee of Union and Progress took over the administration, the relations between these two gradually began to break down and significant differences of opinion emerged between them. Therefore, the information given by Kâzım Karabekir Pasha, a deep-rooted Unionist, about Enver Pasha, his closest friend for a period, and his evaluations about him are very important. In this study, an attempt was made to analyse all the activities and personality of Enver Pasha, from before “the Mudros Surrender” until his death. In these evaluations, the information in the memoirs of Kâzım Karabekir Pasha, his closest friend and confidant, was taken as reference. In addition, the works of some people and writers who were personal witnesses of the period and close to Enver Pasha, in which they wrote their observations about Enver Pasha, were also evaluated.
