An unexpected case of nasolacrimal duct obstruction with dacryolith containing Pleurostomophora richardsiae

Abstract

Abstract Here, we report a case of chronic dacryocystitis and nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) with dacryolith containing Pleurostomophora richardsiae and Candida albicans in a female patient. She presented with 10 years of epiphora and 1 year of a recurring cyst near her right medial canthus. On examination, the patient was found to have a dilated lacrimal sac and evidence of NLDO. The patient underwent dacryocystorhinostomy, during which a dacryolith was removed, and subsequent microbiological analysis revealed the presence of P. richardsiae and C. albicans . To our knowledge, there are only two prior case reports in the literature documenting P. richardsiae related to NLDO.
