Detection of sludge in critical region of oil transportation pipelines using robot

Abstract

The maintenance of pipelines, particularly the identification and removal of sludge, is the fundamental issue in the transportation of oil.Pigging is a technique that often involves squeezing sledges out of pipelines to remove sludge, but it happens frequently.Pigging causes a lot of oil flow interruptions and uses a lot of energy.Additionally, the entire oil flow in that pipeline should be stopped, and the pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) should be operated by high-pressure pumps.Therefore, if the wax sludge profile is predetermined by a robot, the pigging operation can only be carried out when the sludge thickness reaches a critical value and is significant enough to impede the oil flow.Thus, a critical level for sludge formation can be established, and pigging is only permitted when the critical level is attained.This aids in accurate pipeline monitoring and can prevent waste from recurring pointless pigging procedures.This can be accomplished using a robot equipped with sensors that can detect and interpret the sludge profile, allowing the essential areas to be selected for the sludge removal procedure, that may be utilised for cleaning pipelines that flow with the current of crude oil within the underground pipes have been the main focus of this research.
