Abstract

This chapter provides the basic concept of analog modulation and demodulation. It covers amplitude modulation (AM) and detection, single-sideband (SSB) AM, double-sideband suppressed carrier (DSB SC) AM, AM envelope detector, frequency modulation (FM), Noise suppression in FM, phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency demodulation, preemphasis and deemphasis in FM systems, and the principles of phase modulation (PM). The main disadvantage of an analog communication system is its susceptibility to noise and interference. In AM systems, the amplitude of the carrier signal varies according to the change in the amplitude of the modulating signal. SSB carrier is a type of AM modulation that transmits only a SSB instead of the two sidebands and the carrier. The purpose of an AM demodulator in a radio receiver is to recover the low-frequency baseband signal from the high-frequency carrier signal.
