Abstract
Abstract Site-directed mutagenesis has contributed considerably to our understanding of the relationship between protein structure and function. However, since site-directed mutagenesis is laborious, at least with regard to all the possible mutants that should be examined for a full understanding of any particular aspect, it is important that other more efficient methods for the investigation of protein structure by mutagenesis should be available. More importantly. site directed mutagenesis experiments are limited by the imagination of the investigator which has proved in recent years to be often too limited to understand the complexities of proteins.
