Abstract The genera Leishmania and Trypanosoma belong to the family Trypanoso-matidae of the order Kinetoplastida. All members of this family are parasitic and possess a single locomotory flagellum, which arises from a flagellar pocket. All members of the Kinetoplastida have a DNA-containing organelle, the kinetoplast, which is part of a simple mitochondrion and is located adjacent to the flagellar basal body. Only the Leishmania and Trypanosoma have species which infect and cause disease in man. Two genera of sandfly act as vectors, Phlebotomus in the Old World and Lutzomya in the New World.
