Abstract
Abstract Pangaea experienced further disintegration during the Cretaceous. The main body of Laurasia approached its modem location but the Eurasian part deviated remarkably south-westward, forming an angle of several tens of degrees with modem latitudes. In the southern hemisphere, Gondwana underwent several rifting and dismembering phases, the most remark able of which were the extensive rift-openning of the South Atlantic and rapid northward movement of the Indian plate. The Tethyan or Neo-Tethyan (sensu Sengor, 1984) Ocean existed between Eurasia and eastern Gondwana, but controversy persists as to its possible dimensions.
