Abstract

Abstract Pain is unlike any of the other sensory modalities. It is not a single measurable sensation like light and sound; it is an experience, the nature of which depends not only on the nature of the stimulus, but on the programming of pain perception mechanisms and their cerebral interpretation. There is no single pathway in the nervous system which is responsible for the perception of pain. The integrated response of many physiological mechanisms may be interpreted as pain.
