This chapter introduces the main concepts for any organization to improve its data management capabilities. The different existing frameworks in data management provide different perspectives on how to approach data management. These perspectives provide a vision that can be used to develop strategies, roadmaps, organize work teams and align their functions. A data reference framework provides organizations with tools to manage, organize, evaluate, improve data. Data Governance is the area of knowledge that exercises authority and control over the management of data assets. It focuses on how decisions are made regarding data. Data architecture describes how data should be structured, how data should be integrated into business processes, and how data should be controlled so that an organization can manage it effectively. Data modeling is a critical component of data management. Managing data security is critical to the success of data management.
