Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of a vertical constant throughflow on convective instabilities in a horizontal layer of fluid-saturated bi-disperse porous medium heated from below. Via linear instability and nonlinear stability analyses of the throughflow solution, the linear and nonlinear critical Rayleigh numbers for convective instabilities have been determined and studied as functions of the strength of the throughflow.
