Artisanal fishing activities carried out by fishermen from three riverside communities in the municipality of Abaetetuba, Pará

This article aims to portray the types of artisanal fishing activities practiced by fishermen from riverside communities on the Assacú, Sapucajuba and Costa Maratauira rivers, in the municipality of Abaetetuba, Baixo Tocantins, Pará. Methodologically, it is a qualitative and quantitative research. As data collection techniques, a form containing closed and semi-structured questions, participant observation and image recording was used. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed using the Content Analysis technique. The study had the participation of 21 (84.0%) fishermen and four (16.0%) fishermen, aged between 23 and 65 years. In such communities, fishermen carry out fishing activities known locally as bottom fishing, bubuia fishing and matapi fishing, in which, using fishing gear, longline, gillnet and matapi, they predominantly capture the aquatic species: mapará, hake, bream, young and shrimp. According to those researched, in recent years, successive decreases in the quantity of fishes and shrimp captured have been observed, on the other hand, it's increasing the acquisition of fishing equipment by fishers.
