Abstract

Significance Sri Lanka must attend to debt restructuring as part of its four-year, USD3bn bailout programme with the Fund. The Fund’s Executive Board approved the bailout in March, roughly ten months after Colombo formally defaulted on its external debt. Impacts A long delay in reaching agreements on debt restructuring could stall the bailout programme. IMF support will continue to be key to ensuring access to other sources of external financing, for example multilateral development banks. GDP will shrink again in 2023, although not by as much as in 2022, as Sri Lanka takes time to restore macroeconomic stability.
