Relationship of the Body Mass Index and waist circumference with the severity of heart failure among patients in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The risk of heart failure (HF) is increased in individuals with obesity. Obesity is divided into central and peripheral obesity. This study assessed the relationship of obesity based on the waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI) with the severity of HFMETHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 52 patients with HF admitted to the Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, a tertiary hospital in East Indonesia. Data were obtained via anthropometric measurement, echocardiography, and history taking. The different effects of the type of obesity on the severity of HF were assessed. Central obesity was assessed on the basis of the WC (>90 cm for men and >80 cm for women) and peripheral obesity on the basis of the BMI calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters.RESULTS: The severity of HF was significantly associated with obesity based on the WC (P=0.003), but not with that based on the BMI (P=0.473).CONCLUSIONS: Obesity measured using the WC is related to the severity of HF.
