Abstract

Summary The energy transition is considered to be a pathway toward the transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon by the second half of this century. At its heart is the need to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions to limit climate change. India as one of the major economies in the world cannot abdicate its responsibility and thus make an energy transition from fossil fuel-based energy systems to one based on renewable resources to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. Located in a tropical region, India is blessed with abundant clean renewable energy resources. In this context, it is imperative to develop and promote alternative clean energy sources that can lead to sustainability of the energy–environment system. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India, the share of renewable energy in India’s energy mix has increased from 23% to 26% in April-August 2020. India will reach the target of carbon emission reduction by 30–33 percent before the pledged year of 2030. Therefore, power generation from renewable sources is on the rise in India to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions to limit climate change.
