The Effect of Song Lyrics Sentiment Analysis on Improving Vocal Expression: Using the ‘Wheel of Emotions’

Singing communicates with the public through lyrics and melody. However, to effectively deliver lyrics and melody, concentration and the ability to convey emotions must be high. This thesis aims to develop a method of emotion analysis for song lyrics to improve vocal music’s emotional expression and delivery power. Furthermore, it will use it to understand the emotions conveyed by the lyrics. The lyrics analysis program used psychologist Robert Plutchik‘s as its theoretical underpinning. The participants could understand the emotions the singer should express in the lyrics through a mixture of two emotions selected according to the song’s form. The By applying the program to students enrolled in the Department of Applied Music and Vocal Major, the participants improved their understanding of the meaning of the lyrics. Moreover, their concentration on lyrics and emotions also improved.
