Social Childrearing Within Day Care: Rosehill Day Care Center

It is within this broader cultural context that we now focus on the distinctive social childrearing of day care through an in depth study of the daily life of teachers and children in one day-care center, Rosehill. In March 1973 this Ecumenical Ministry appointed a Task Force on Day Care, the group that established Rosehill Day Care Center. Day care centers usually are open from early morning until early evening and thus both children and staff’s arrival and departure are staggered. All of these features are characteristics of Rosehill staff’s use of time and space. All Rosehill teachers take turns in supervising the outdoor playground for a portion of early care. In the day to day, the ambience of the free play in the Yellow Room area does seem significantly different than that of early care. The philosophy of Rosehill Day Care is to provide more than custodial care for children, as important as that care is.
