Abstract

The addition of solar panels to an aircraft wing deforms the wing shape. As a result, the aerodynamic and structural characteristics are affected. Consequently, the range and endurance are directly changed. The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of attaching solar panels to an unmanned aerial vehicle's wing on its aerodynamic performance and structure, using CFD and FEA approaches. Lift and drag are used to analyze the aerodynamic performance. It is found that the solar panel has a minor effect on the aerodynamic performance of the wing, while it has a bigger effect on the UAV wing structure.
