Abstract

The third-generation networks were designed to support both voice centric and data centric use cases. Wideband code division multiplexing (WCDMA) networks have been or are being decommissioned since newer data-centric 4G and 5G cellular technologies provide better service and spectral efficiency. This chapter provides an overview of the WCDMA physical layer. The third-generation partnership project (3GPP) provides a more detailed summary of WCDMA physical layer functions and other related 3GPP specifications in 3GPP TS 25.201. Universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) system specifications introduced the concept of bearer for UMTS connectivity and quality of service model. The chapter provides a brief overview of protocols within the UMTS radio protocol stack. It also introduces the original Rel-5 design of High-speed downlink packet access and describes the more advanced methods added in later 3GPP releases.
