Abstract

A review of physical processes which control characteristic features of the polar ionosphere is given. Especially, roles of the two consequences of the magnetospheric processes, namely, the energetic particle precipitation and the convective electric field are discussed preponderantly. In connection with the thermal structure of the auroral ionosphere, anomalous resistivity and its ionospheric effects are mentioned briefly.
