What is Ethics of Sciences, Technologies, and Innovation?

This chapter commences with a true story and oxymoron that explains the ethics of security and surveillance technologies. It discusses applied ethics, normative ethics, descriptive ethics and meta-ethics and explores the place of ethics in these contexts. Ethics of science and technology readily turns to matters on a spectrum extending from specific technologies through to broadly construed societal issues, while business ethics readily turns to actions of and/or within corporations, albeit from an individual through to an international and/or comparative perspective. The chapter explains that the concept of meta-ethics and the programmatic call that accompanies it mark a twofold movement in relation to ethics. A path of reflection which, through stories and thought experiments, invites particular forms of introspection as to one's own conceptions and values. This is where meta-ethics and mesa-ethics meet.
