Abstract

Introduction. Burning mouth syndrome is an unspecific oral pathological condition characterized by chronic pain lasting at least 4-6 months. The pain might be accompanied by a burning sensation localized on the oral mucosa, without being justified by the presence of any lesions. In some cases this “condition” may be accompanied by dry mouth symptoms. Material and method. This study represents an analysis of a case series of burning mouth syndrome patients. Anamnestic data (medical history, responses to the QX Michigan questionnaire), symptoms and salivary parameters were also recorded for this analysis. Results. It was found a lot of signs due to the lack of saliva such of coated tongue, oral candidiasis or positive mirror sign. However, most patients had a normal or slightly decreased quantity of saliva. Conclusions. Dry mouth does not seem to be a pathological condition which is present in all cases of burning mouth syndrome, but for clarifying this issue further investigations are needed.
