Abstract
Chemical manufacturing is an important industry and an essential part of modern life. The production of chemicals has been occurring around the world for several thousand years. Explosions and fires in chemical plants have also occurred over the same period. Every year several explosions occur in chemical processing facilities. Process Safety Management (PSM) was developed to help find solutions to prevent chemical explosions. PSM requires chemical manufacturers to adhere to regulations that help to ensure the predisposing factors to a chemical explosion do not occur. This chapter focuses on three chemical plant explosions: DuPont La Porte, TX, Methyl Mercaptan Release – November 15, 2014 BP Texas City Refinery Explosion – March 23, 2005 T2 Laboratories, Inc. Explosion, MCMT Explosion – December 19, 2007
