On the Specific Features of Pupal Development of Horseflies (Diptera, Tabanidae) in Northwestern Russia

Abstract Specific features of pupal development of horseflies were experimentally studied by the example of species of the family Tabanidae in Pskov Province. In particular, the dependence of duration of the pupal stage on the temperature was studied. Under stable laboratory conditions, pupae of the same species obtained from the larvae collected in the same year showed strong variation in their developmental time. By contrast, pupae obtained from the larvae that had overwintered in the laboratory showed the smallest range of developmental time variation. The reasons for these differences are discussed.
