Abstract
Tap-changers are important but frail components of converter transformers. It is important to investigate the transients from the transformer windings to tap-changers. However, available transformer models in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) cannot accurately and physically simulate the transient characteristics of the transformer when the tap-changer works. Furthermore, the parameters of the present transformer models rely on laboratory tests or finite element model (FEM) simulations. In this paper, a multi-winding single-phase converter transformer model based on the material parameters, the structure of the transformer, and duality is built and validated. The model can be realized easily in EMTP software and used to simulate the low-frequency transients of the multi-winding transformer considering the tap-changer before the manufacture.
