Seascape character assessment of small islands in the East Mediterranean

The seascape of Greece is not only an important depository of natural and cultural assets but also vulnerable to climate change, tourism development and the preceding financial crisis. These characters of small islands’ seascape need to be protected as they constitute valuable ecosystems at the interface between land and sea. In this chapter, we aim to (a) define the use and applicability of a seascape assessment methodology particularly adjusted to the seascape of small Greek islands, (b) present its necessity to national/regional and local planning policies, and (c) analyse potential obstacles, opportunities and put forward strategic steps that can reveal the seascape character (hinterland, coastal and marine). The special characteristics of Gavdos seascape are identified, mapped and analyzed and the analysis is used as a basis for the creation of a series of map overlays of landscape and marine factors, including a draft definition of seascape division units. A series of seascape character types is presented providing brief descriptions of their characteristics and threats of change or degradation. In conclusion, the above research presents a practical tool for seascape protection, planning and management, particularly adjusted to the capabilities and necessities of a small island’s institutional and administrative system.
