Abstract

When plucking a tuft from the upper surface of a bale of raw cotton, the size or weight of such a tuft is greatly affected by various mechanical conditions of plucking. As a first step to clear these relations between the tuft size or weight and the aforementioned conditions, we try to find the tuft size or weight from the state of distribution of fibers to compose a tuft by simplifying all forms of fibers to constitute a bale.At the same time, we examine the result of. the aformentioned discussions by replacing fibers to constitute a bale with yarns cut to the constant length, preparing a model of bale and plucking a model tuft experimentally with opening tooth. The results are summerized as follows : 1. When plucking a tuft from a model of bale, the distribution of number of yarns in the tuft section of which central axis runs through the center of opening tooth width can be approximated with normal distribution.2. The size or weight of model tuft increase as the opening tooth width increases to 0.1 of the length of tuft composing yarns and then almost stayed the same to 0.15.
