Abstract

The vital signs monitor is a valuable tool that helps provide information to the medical and nursing staff about the physiologic condition of the patient. It typically comprises of a set of modules for real-time measurement of various physiological parameters. These monitors are also known as patient monitors. The five most commonly monitored and displayed parameter modules are electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate, pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate, respiration rate, body temperature, and noninvasive and invasive blood pressure (BP). Respiratory rate is a vital sign used to monitor the progression of illness and an abnormal respiratory rate is an important marker of serious illness. Temperature monitor is intended for continuous monitoring of body temperature. Noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitor measures BP using the oscillometric measurement technique to determine systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures and pulse rate.
