Abstract

This chapter provides a very basic introduction to Maxwell's equations and describes one simple yet exact solution. The normal component of the electric field at the perfect electric conductor interface could have any nonzero values associated with the distributed surface charges. The realized gain is perhaps the most important antenna radiation parameter for a practical antenna. The antenna directivity should be independent of the feeding mechanism; it must be the property of the antenna itself, similar to the antenna's input impedance. An antenna is fully characterized by its impedance as well as directivity/radiation patterns. The antenna gain is the antenna directivity deteriorated due to antenna loss. A simple, useful, and powerful result that establishes the antenna-to-antenna power transfer function in terms of the antenna directivities is the Friis transmission equation.
