Abstract
l f o x i d e s are conveniently prepared by oxidation of the respective p e n i c i l l i n or cephalosporin i n nethylene c h l o r l d e using hydrogen peroxide and a c e t i c acid.Replacement of t h e a c e t i c acid by Formic acid praduces M e respective p e n i c i l l i n and cephalosporin sulfones i n high y i e l d s .Considerable a t t e n t i o n has been devoted, i n recent years, t o a study of t h e conversion of p e n i c i l l i n s , 1, and cephalosporins, 2, t o the corresponding sulfoxidea. 2 and 4, and s u l f a n e s , 5 and 6.
