Redevelopment

There are multiple pressures that encourage the redevelopment of condominiums. A building may have become so run down as to be unsafe, become outdated in terms of the needs and desires of its residents, or be inefficient in terms of its internal services and facilities. There are also pressures to redevelop when condominiums are not considered the highest and best use of the land on which they sit. Redevelopment can be achieved in a variety of ways. Condominiums can be knocked down and replaced with another building or undergo transformative redesign within and beyond the existing building structure. This chapter discusses the major triggers for redevelopment, the different ways in which redevelopment can be initiated, the different forms that redevelopment can take, the challenges of redevelopment and the impacts that redevelopment can have on cities as a whole.
