Abstract

Abstract An institutional review board (IRB) is an independent group or committee consisting of a combination of medical/scientific and nonmedical/nonscientific members that is formally organized to oversee biomedical research involving human subjects at an institution. IRBs or institutional ethics committees (IECs) are an essential part of the clinical trial system. This article presents an overview of the process of the institutional review board (IRB) and institutional ethics committee (IEC) along with resources for researchers who want to be involved in clinical trial research.
