Abstract

Classical mechanics deals with the statical or dynamical motion of material objects. The objects are mathematically regarded as point masses or rigid bodies which are dynamical systems in space and time. Here, the concept of space and time is confined to the Newtonian sense. In general, classical mechanics may be categorized as vectorial mechanics and analytical mechanics. The representative of vectorial mechanics is Newtonian mechanics, whereas analytical mechanics can be divided into Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics. It is believed that the distinction between Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics emanates from the notion of space. These concepts are covered in this chapter.
