Abstract

This article provides an overview of the literature on the subtyping of specific reading disabilities. The foundation for such subtyping is presented, with particular emphasis on how the rationale for a multidimensional conceptualization of reading problems evolved. Two broad-band classification approaches are described and several illustrative reading subtyping efforts are highlighted. The current status of reading disability subtyping efforts is described, underscoring recent research findings relative to dyslexia and subtyping. In addition, discussion focuses on continuing dilemmas facing clinicians and researchers working from a multidimensional conceptualization of reading disabilities. I conclude by addressing progress toward attaining an operational reading disability classification system. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
