Abstract

These lectures provide a brief overview of heavy quark production in QCD. We begin with a review of heavy quark production beyond leading order. Some puzzling aspects of charm production, not described by perturbative QCD alone, are touched upon. The intrinsic charm model is then introduced and some of its predictions are described. It is shown how the intrinsic charm probability is obtained from the charm structure function. The model is compared to hadroproduction data with a Σ− beam and the expected results for a new experiment at CERN are described. Only charm is discussed here but other, heavier, quarks can be treated identically.
