Abstract Deficiency of glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is the most common enzyme deficiency in humans and has many different local variants. The enzyme deficiency is manifested mainly in red cells, where it can lead to acute hemolytic anemia caused by failure to prevent oxidative damage. Its prevalence is due to the fact that it confers a selective advantage against malaria infection.
