McNemar's Test

Abstract

This chapter presents data sets for which McNemar's test is the right test to use. It reviews McNemar's test manually for a 2x2 table that describes change of status before and after an intervention and interprets SPSS output to determine the level of significance. The chapter discusses the model for McNemar's test where data show the status in individuals in a matched case-control study. There are four types of matched case-control pairs: exposed-exposed, exposed-unexposed, unexposed-exposed, and unexposed-unexposed. For McNemar's test, the useful information in the table is from the matched case-control pairs where the exposures are different, cells b and c. SPSS offers two ways of accessing McNemar's test. The first uses what are called 'legacy dialogs'. The second uses the main menus. It takes a little longer to set up but gives a better overall analysis.
