Abstract

Abstract Benthos is the name given to the flora and fauna occurring on, in or close to the bottom substrata of aquatic environments, including lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and the sea. In this respect, the term serves to distinguish the biota from those of the open water or ‘pelagic zone’. Benthic ecology is concerned with the biotic interrelationships of the benthos and its environments. Thus separated from pelagic ecology, the ecology of aquatic substrata is nevertheless an integral component of the ecology of the entire system.
