Abstract
Coming out is the shortened term of “coming out of the closet” and refers to lesbian, gay, and bisexual people's disclosure of their sexual orientation to themselves and others, and to transgender people's disclosure of their (trans)gender identity. The notion of the “closet” (and coming out of it) has become increasingly important in contemporary societies because it draws explicit attention to the effects of heterosexism on LGB people. Coming out has been theorized by writer such as Judith Butler and Steven Sedgwick and continues to be researched in a range of contexts.
