Abstract
This chapter provides a high-level overview of the Internet architecture. It describes the different types of service providers and how they interconnect their networks. The Internet relies heavily on the interconnections provided by the large global Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers, and regional Internet exchange points (IXPs). The services that ISPs offer to their customers include Internet access, Internet transit, domain name system (DNS) services, and content-hosting services. An autonomous system (AS) is a routing domain managed by a single administration. Border Gateway Protocol is used as the routing protocol between ASes because of its scalability and support for a rich set of policies. The objective of a peering agreement is for ASes to exchange traffic with each other for mutual benefit. The primary benefit is that they can both avoid paying transit charges.
