Abstract
The aqueous solubility equilibrium behavior of seven medium molecular weight, liquid, binary hydrocarbon mixtures has been determined at 20°C. Binary hydrocarbon mixtures containing structurally similar compounds exhibited ideal solution behavior, but deviations from ideality by as much as a factor of 2.5 at 0.1 mole-fraction occurred with aromatic-aliphatic mixtures. The ratio of concentrations of hydrocarbon solutes appears to be independent of the degree of saturation of the binary hydrocarbon mixture with water. This independence implies that the equilibrium phenomena observed could be applicable under nonequilibrium conditions.
