Abstract

Maintenance management deals with decision making with regards to preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) actions and the planning and execution of the tasks involved. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of management in general. It then deals with the key issues of maintenance management, and discusses maintenance organization. A good maintenance organization provides clear roles and responsibilities, an effective span of control, facilitation of good supervision, effective reporting, and a continuous improvement culture. Next, the chapter presents alternative approaches used in maintenance, namely reliability-centred maintenance (RCM), total productive maintenance (TPM), and risk-based maintenance (RBM). The ultimate goal of TPM, with respect to equipment, is to increase its effectiveness to its highest potential and to maintain it at that level. Finally, the chapter focuses on risk and maintenance, and also discusses maintenance management systems (MMS).
