Experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of ordinary amines on scenedesmus which was a vegetable colony formed by the eight cells of Scenedesmus bijuga var. alternans. Amines morphologically transformed scenedesmus into spherocell, as previously reported in blepharisma. This activity increased as the pKa values of amines increased and the pH value of the medium increased. Spherocell obtained from scenedesmus by amine required the combination of Fe(III) ion and Ca(II) ion or Zn(II) ion and Ca(II) ion in reverse transformation to normal scenedesmus. The action of amines on scenedesmus was the same as that on blepharisma. However, the metal ions responsible for the maintenance of the morphology of scenedesmus were different from those in the case of blepharisma.
