Abstract

The fact that Euler was born at Basel and died at St. Petersburg suggests a connection with the Bernoulli family.* This was the case. Euler's father had studied under Jacques Bernoulli, Euler studied under Jean. At the suggestion of Daniel and Nicholas Bernoulli, Catherine I of Russia invited Euler to come to St. Petersburg in 1727, and in 17 33, Euler succeeded Daniel Bernoulli as professor of mathematics in the Academy of Science there.
