Abstract

Maxillary second molar is the seventh tooth from the midline of the maxillary arch. Supplements maxillary first molar in function. It is also known as “teenager tooth” because of its age of eruption. It differs from maxillary first molar in few aspects. The distal side of the crown is reduced bucco-palatally, so that crown appears more rhomboidal than first molar. The crown shows presence of only four cusps. The cusp of Carabelli is absent. The cervico-occlusal length of the crown is reduced. The roots are distally tilted and are well confined with in the root trunk compared to that of first molar. Buccal roots are nearly parallel to each other.
