Abstract The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is the largest and one of the oldest municipal police agencies in the United States. The NYPD has made important contributions to American policing throughout its history. Today it is known for its order maintenance policing strategy, its Compstat managerial process, and its counter‐terrorism efforts.
