Abstract
The present paper is an attempt to evolve a practical method of determining the geodetic azimuth of a referring mark close to the observer's horizon, and the η- and ε-components of the deviation of the vertical from observations of only three stars of which two constitute a pair of north and south stars and the third lies close to the prime vertical. The method is applicable in higher latitudes as well. The geodetic azimuth is used as azimuth control for a survey while the deviation of the vertical is required for the astronomical levelling to determine the general figure of the earth.
